Description:

A Penteadora was founded in 1930 by Father Alfredo Marques Santos, who aimed to improve the social and economic conditions of the small village of Unhais da Serra. He did this by creating a company dedicated to washing and combing wool from the numerous flocks of sheep grazing in the region. Unhais da Serra, located in central Portugal at 680 meters above sea level, is part of the largest Portuguese mountain range and is rich in water resources. The textile industry and tourism are the main economic pillars of this region. Over the past 90 years, the company has grown significantly, becoming a vertically integrated enterprise—working from fiber to fabric—creating its own colors, yarns, fabrics, and exclusive finishes that define A Penteadora’s unique quality. This 90-year experience, combined with technology, has made A Penteadora recognized as one of the leading companies in the Portuguese wool sector and one of the best European producers of combed and carded fabrics. Being located within the area classified by UNESCO as a GLOBAL GEOPARK (Estrela UNESCO Global Geopark), our concern for the environmental impact of our industrial activity is heightened. The region where A Penteadora operates is equipped with solar panels supplying a significant portion of the energy used, and the company also has its own wastewater treatment plant (ETAR). By reusing water and steam, A Penteadora manages water collection in collaboration with the local community, and all packaging materials are separated and sent for recycling. We launched the Re.Born program, through which we recently obtained GRS (Global Recycled Standard) certification. This program focuses on recycling waste from our production as well as waste collected from our recycling initiatives.
