FEPSA was founded in 1969 in S. João da Madeira, through the union of six hat industry manufacturers with roots dating back to the early 20th century, and largely represents the consolidation of a very old industry in Europe, which in Portugal experienced significant growth in the 18th century under the Marquis of Pombal. FEPSA’s hat felts are produced by men and women whose knowledge and dedicated work compete in a universe of high-quality products and services. From the very beginning, we have maintained a constant focus on innovation, investing in technological development, ensuring flexibility to respond to a wide variety of clients, and adopting several different elements of production organization. Felt is produced by the random arrangement of animal fibers on a surface, forming a web, and its felting through compression and vibration under the action of water and heat. This manufacturing process has been known to humanity for thousands of years and was one of the first manufacturing processes developed by man. Felt, therefore, has a history almost as old as the history of mankind itself. The role of the hat has always been a symbol of power and sovereignty, a sign of superiority, a marker of social identity. The felt hat has distinguished people throughout history, defined personalities, created identities… and continues to do so.
